Mawaweel, organized by the Cairo Jazz Club Agency and Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center as part of Fawanees Festival 2010, combined a blend of musical and theatrical performances, http://thewizard.webhop.net/cjcagency/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress/img/trans.gifstorytelling and craft workshops from 19th August – 3rd September, 2010 at Darb 1718. The Egypt Travel Authority sponsored ‘Mawaweel’ as part of the Fawanees Festival 2010 incorporation with the Ministry of Culture which took place in numerous locations throughout Cairo during Ramadan.
 
The Mawaweel Ramadan program and activities varied each weekend ensuring there was something enjoyable for everyone. Local musical talents Wust El Balad, Yehya Khalil, The Station Band, Beshir and award winning Fathy Salama took to the stage at Darb 1718 and entertained the crowds.  Danish percussionist and Darbuka player Simona Abdallah came from Denmark and performed alongside Beshir and separately wowing the crowds with her fusion of western sounds with Middle Eastern rhythms.
 
Mawaweel also showcased interesting theatrical performances ‘Sweet China’ and ‘Pantomime’ and ‘More than a Sea’ presented by Oscarisma Studios. Storyteller Abeer Soliman captured the crowds with her reinterpretation of Naguib Mahfouz’s tales ‘Nights of the Thousand Nights’.
 
Together with the musical and theatrical performances, the Mawlawyiah performers provided an artistic spiritual ambiance inspired by the Egyptian heritage along with the effortless skills of Tanoura dancers graced the stage for Mawaweel.
 
Mawaweel’s traditional yet modern program allowed audiences of all ages and nationalities to gather and enjoy the diverse entertainments and local atmosphere.
