Screening of Experimental Films by Gabriel Abrantes and Salomé Lamas @ Darb 1718
We are proud to screen experimental films by Gabriel Abrantes and Salomé Lamas from Portugal on Thursday, 26th November 2015 at 7:00 pm.

The list of experimental works:

The Tower (2015) by Salomé Lamas and Christoph Both-Asmus.
Baby Back Costa Rica (2011) by Gabriel Abrantes
Video Home System (2010-2012) by Salomé Lamas
Liberdade (2011) by Gabriel Abrantes and Benjamin Crotty
A History of Mutual Respect (2010) by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt

Synopsis:

The Tower (2015):

Maybe Kolja’s experiment of merging his body
(human) with the tree (nature) venturing into a border
zone between the earth and the sky is due to his
purity of spirit, to the grandeur of the idiots, or the
foolishness of the mystics; or is it all this together?
Maybe it is a symptom of the enlightened – or simply
an elaborated suicide.

Baby Back Costa Rica (2011):

Three teenage girls are heading home in their Mini Cooper S. They discuss their boyfriends, their boyfriend’s mothers, their boyfriend's’ mother’s cars, and Judaism. After making pizza they go swim in the pool.
This film is part of the sub-genre of horror films where a vehicle is the protagonist, in this case a Mini Cooper S. Pedro Gomes developed an aggressive soundscape, working at the intersection of distorted post-rock guitar with horror film soundtrack tropes.

Video Home System  (2010-2012):

How can I lie that I’m asleep and be faster than my body? – “But it wasn’t so violent, was it?”
She stayed in bed repeating that she was sleepy for 40 minutes.“I’ve wanted it to be almost like a mantra and to generate tension.”
The embroidery draw maps the relation between a mother and a daughter.
Time past and time present if all time is eternally present all time is unredeemable.
“It was a school exercise, I would use what was close to me, what was domestic and you were part of it”
Fourteen years have past. I take her images; I compel her to answer me.
She is the mother. She is the daughter. She is my mother.

Liberdade (2011):
Liberdade recounts a love story between an Angolan boy and his Chines girlfriend, which is complicated when the boy steals Viagra in order to fix his impotence. Through the love story of these two adolescents Abrantes explores the impact of mass immigration and global capital in Angola.

A History of Mutual Respect (2010):

Werner Herzog’s bleak vision of a rebellion and the resulting mayhem in an institution. The entire world is inhabited by midgets.
Shot in Portugal, Brazil and Argentina, A History of Mutual Respect, 2010, responds to the complex dynamic between Brazil and Portugal, as the former coloniser veers towards economic dependency and collapse.

The films will be followed by Q&A with the filmmakers.
Total duration of the films is 94 minutes.
Subtitles are available in English.

About the Portuguese filmmakers:

Gabriel Abrantes is a winner of several prizes, including the Golden Leopard for Best International Short Film at the Locarno Film Festival 2010 for his film A History of Mutual Respect. His films have premiered at festivals such as La Biennale di Venezia, Locarno, Toronto.

  • Ya Hussein (17 minutes), Bahrain, Saudi Arabia 2007-2012. By Faisal Samra.
  • Human Being at work 6 short films (40 min), Cameroon (2007), Nigeria (2006), Mali (2006), Italy (2007), Japan (1999), Dar El Salam (2006). By Pascale Marthine Tayou.

Film synopsis and filmmakers:

  • Bread of Life by Adel Abidin:

Bread is the main sustenance of a person’s diet in many parts of the world. For those it is considered the source of life, treated as a holy object. I was once served bread in a restaurant in Cairo that was so hard it seemed to me more suitable for playing music than to be eaten. It made a pleasant sound as though it was an instrument. I gathered four percussionists who earn their living by playing music for belly dancers in nightclubs and asked them to play with this bread instead. There was something intriguing about playing with the source of life.

Abidin was born in Baghdad in 1973 and currently lives between Helsinki and Amman.
After studying at Baghdad’s Academy of Fine Art and afterwards in Helsinki, he has exhibited his work at some of the great international events and institutions. He notably represented Finland at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007

  • Ya Hussein by Faisal Samra:

Ya Hussain documents the complex rituals of the Ashura celebrations in Bahrain.

Faisal Samra Long considered one of the Arab Gulf’s leading artists and a pioneer of conceptual art in the Middle East, Bahraini-born Saudi national Faisal Samra incorporates digital photography, painting, sculpture, video, and performance into a creative repertoire that explores existentialist themes with the figure at its centre.

  • Human Being at work by Pascale Marthine Tayou
The films depict people in different places in the world while working. They are meant to show the connections human beings have between them even if they seem to be the opposite through this action of work as well as the objects they have and use.

Tayou’s work is characterized by its variability, since he confines himself in his artistic work neither to one medium nor to a particular set of issues. He has contributed to a number of major international exhibitions and art events, such as Documenta 11 (2002), Triennial of Turin (2008), Tate Modern (2009), the Biennials of Kwangju (1997 and 1999), Santa Fe (1997), Sydney (1997), La Havane (1997 and 2006).

Film synopsis and filmmakers:

  • Idlers’ Logic by Khaled Hafez

What does it mean to be Arab African and Middle Eastern in a post-September 11 world?
Three actors mingle and interact without dialogue in a closed space.

Khaled Hafez Born in Cairo, Egypt in 1963 where he currently lives and works. He studied medicine and followed the evening classes of the Cairo School of Fine Arts (Faculty of Fine Arts) in the eighties.
He gave up medical practices in the early nineties for a career in the arts. He later obtained an MFA in new media and digital arts from Transart Institute (New York, USA) and Danube University Krems (Austria).

  • The Taste of Displacement by Dena Al Adeeb

"The Taste of Displacement" is a photography, video project and an experimental performance piece that brings together a diverse group of diasporic Iraqis from various personal and professional backgrounds (including the arts, activism, academia, journalism, and gastronomy) over an intimate dinner. The participants were asked to provide a personally meaningful Iraqi recipe, which was prepared and served collectively. The performative acts of food making, recipe sharing and eating prove to be contested markers of cultural memory.

Dena Al-Adeeb is an artist, writer, researcher, educator and activist born in Baghdad, Iraq and is currently based in New York. Dena is a Ph.D. candidate in the Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies Department, Culture and Representation track with a focus in Arts Politics at New York University. She received her M.A. in Anthropology-Sociology, Visual and Cultural Anthropology at the American University in Cairo.

  • Zimmerfrei, Hometown – Mutonia

Mutonia is a strange village inside a village, a temporary town which has been transformed over time, relating to a bigger urban, territorial and social context. It was born out of the anarchic, iconoclastic and experimental spirit of the travellers and cyber punks who founded it; the town has been home to two generations of travellers and has become a place of origin, a “motherland” to come back to, or to stop and raise children.

Zimmerfrei is an artists’ collective formed by Massimo Carozzi, Anna de Manincor and Anna Rispoli. The collective has two headquarters, one in Brussels and one in Bologna – the city where the group was formed in 2000 – and its artistic practice range from video art to documentary films, sound and environmental installations, as well as photography, performances, workshops and public art projects.
