About

Mashrou3 Hagar: Art Empowers! is a dynamic artistic project co-funded by the European Union and Darb 1718. It offers a series of free workshops in June & July 2012 at Darb 1718 for interested artists.

Description

Mashrou3 Hagar: Art Empowers! is a dynamic artistic project co-funded by the European Union and Darb 1718 Contemporary Art & Culture Centre. The project aims at fostering the emergence of a post January 25 generation of visual artists by providing means and expertise to enhance their freedom of expression on a specific subject: women’s empowerment.
The project will mainly focus on young artists who would benefit from technical training in the arts to best express their message through the privileged media of the revolution, i.e. video art, photography, graphic design and street art.
The selection of participating young artists will be undertaken based on a dossier in relation with the selected theme (see selection criteria in FAQ). http://www.darb1718.com/mashrou3-hagar/faq/
The project specifically aims to: initiate a dialogue among artists on how art empowers; provide technical training through workshops that will result in original individual or group art works; and disseminate the outcomes of this dialogue through an itinerant exhibition to take place in Cairo, Alexandria and Aswan.

Mashrou3 Hagar: Art Empowers! will be undertaken in three phases that will consist of:
1. Virtual and actual discussion platforms (info sessions with prominent women’s empowerment NGOs, associations and public figures);
2. Workshops for young visual artists (given by professional European curators/artists); and
3. An itinerant exhibition to disseminate the outcome of the dialogue platform and workshops in Cairo, Alexandria & Aswan.
