Nicole Roerick presented a special contemporary dance performance at Darb 1718 on Saturday, January 31st at 7:00 PM.

About the performance:
This piece explores the idea of personal identity in many different contexts. As an individual who has put herself in a new country and a new culture, Nicole (Roerick) is constantly being challenged and experiencing new things all the time. She is also challenging her own innate ideals and views on her own culture and the ways in which she was brought up in the United States. Being a white, blonde, female with tattoos and short hair is not quite the norm here in Egypt. She is exploring how she is able to understand other points of view and how she can still remain true to herself while also respecting the environment she is now a part of. Some of the questions she is asking herself include: How can I share my experiences with others to help them understand my beliefs? How can I learn more about the culture here and the individuals who I see on the streets? How do I approach people and interact with others whom I don't know but am curious about, and how do others do the same with me? How can I relate to people if I am not approachable or if others are not accepting of who I am?

This piece is a way for Nicole to share a part of her personal self to others, whether they are strangers or people she already interacts with. She is displaying herself in a few different ways in order to get reactions from the audience and to question their first reactions when seeing her, and to find out where those instincts come from. She also hopes to gain a sense of who the audience members are and find a way to relate to them on a personal level.

This will be an interactive installation and performance and Nicole (or Roerick) invites the audience members to bring an open mind and their own experiences with them. The performance will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
