“Crossings : contemporary Arab artists” is an exhibition symbolizing the aesthetic changes being experienced by Arab societies. In fact, it features contemporary art in all its diversity – a diversity which invites us to cross repeatedly back and forth through time and space from one medium to another, from the wanderings of the imagination in the case of some artists, to the explosion of reality in others.

This cultural nomadism leaves unmistakable traces in artistic creativity. This exhibition essentially brings together works by up and coming artists, which it juxtaposes with works by artists from previous generations and from different countries.
Their common denominator is their desire for dialog and communication, coupled with a shared spirit of inquiry about their identity in relation to world issues. Painters,
photographers, video makers and installation artists all translate the deepest concerns of their own personal world and the inventive power of their creative potential into art in their own way.

The exhibition Crossings is designed as a metaphor for this creativity in motion, in which the artist gives form to his personal vision and opens up a path in other people’s perspective.
It is also a story of friendship and close bonds between human beings who share the same concerns and who dream of a better world.

After its season at the Grand Palais in Paris in the spring of 2008, Crossings is pursuing its journey at the Darb 17 18 - Egyptian Contemporary and Culture Center, situated in
El Fustat in Cairo’s old town, in order to emphasize more clearly this meeting between history and modernity, as well as the connection between the local and the global.
I would like to thank all the artists for taking part and for their support. I would also like to thank the Enrico Navarra gallery and the team there, whose loans and collaboration made
it possible to mount this exhibition in Cairo. Brahim Alaoui
